Race For The Iris1

This level begins with Lara sliding down a slope. When she reaches the bottom, she finds herself standing in the mouth of a stone statue in the form of a huge head.
Von Croy:
And now for the last. You are an exemplary student, Lara -- although you have not yet learned the root of all adventuring -- the craving to win, at whatever cost. I throw down the guantlet to you, my child. Whoever is first to the Iris claims the prize.
Lara:
Watch your back old man. I warn you, I'll pull no punches.
Von Croy:
(Laughs) I expected no less! On the count of three: One... two... (follow plot)
Werner takes off before finishing counting. SPRINT2 after him to the far left corner of this small outdoor courtyard. After entering a small door, turn right down the hallway and quickly press the WALK button to make an abrupt stop at the edge of a pit of spikes. Do a STANDING JUMP over the first pit of spikes, then HOP BACK and do a RUNNING JUMP to clear the second pit of spikes.

Run down another short hallway and use the WALK button to once again stop abruptly at the edge of a large pit. HOP BACK and do a RUNNING JUMP and GRAB to reach the other side. The camera angle will shift back to show Lara grabbing the vegetation on the opposite wall. CLIMB UP the wall and PULL UP to the top.

Turn right and enter a a building with an arched doorway. If Lara has managed to keep up with Von Croy, at this point, Lara will find he has entered a doorway to the right. It is actually possible to catch up with him before he throws the lever that blocks your way, but this is an opportunity to overtake him.

Allow Von Croy to enter the doorway on the right and throw the lever that seals that path off. Instead of following him, turn left3 and go through a smaller door with the two crocodiles on either side, waiting for the door to open if necessary.

Turn left and Lara starts to run over a very unstable rope bridge. If she hesitates, the rope bridge will give way and she will fall down onto the spikes below. Therefore, keep running forward until Lara starts sliding down the short slope ahead. When she gets about halfway down the slope, press JUMP. Lara will jump over a pit of spikes and land on another downward slope. Immediately press JUMP again to clear a second pit of spikes. If done correctly, Lara should land on her feet at the opposite side. Otherwise, she may have to grab the ledge and pull up.

Continue running forward and turn left down the hallway. Lara will enter an outdoor area with some fallen rocks and debris. Do a RUNNING JUMP onto the large rocks ahead. Drop down the other side of the rocks and immediately turn right into a small opening in the wall. Do not run forward to the room with the pool ahead as it is a dead end. Lara should be ahead of Von Croy at this point. He will be climbing out of the pool ahead as Lara slips into the small opening.

Turn right down the hallway and enter an outdoor area with a rope bridge. If Lara is ahead of Von Croy at this point, she can sprint across the bridge and continue down another corridor. If Von Croy has beaten Lara across the rope bridge, then he may have already cut the bridge down. Lara will have no choice but to dive into the pool of water below. She can swim down a tunnel at the opposite end and pull up onto a jagged walkway in the next room.

No matter if Lara runs or swims to this jagged walkway, continue forward through a small opening under a raised gate. (There is a switch to the left of this gate that Lara can use to shut the gate. If Lara closes this gate before Von Croy arrives, he makes an unnecessary detour which puts Lara ahead while going around the upper level of this room.) Turn left down the hallway and run up a slope. Do a RUNNING JUMP off the edge of another large spike pit and GRAB the vegetation on the opposite side. CLIMB UP the wall and PULL UP. Repeat the RUNNING JUMP and GRAB to clear a second spike pit. If this is done properly, Lara will not graze the top of the spikes at the opposite end of this pit and sustain damage. PULL UP at the opposite side.

Run forward and head left. Do a RUNNING JUMP onto a dark block at the far left side of the next room. This leads to another large pit that is traversed by a rope bridge. If the treacherous Von Croy beats Lara to this pit, he will once again cut down the rope bridge. If the bridge is down, this pit has a rope hanging above it that will allow Lara to cross. Do a RUNNING JUMP to GRAB the rope and swing forward using the sprint button. Use the jump button to let go of the rope, but be careful not to let go when Lara is too high or she will grab the roof of the next building!

Vault up into the left window on the opposite side, and turn left. Lara will find a large open pit with a huge head statue on the opposite side. Below is a pit with a cages on either side containing wild boars. To the right is a gate that will still be open if Lara beats Von Croy to this point. If the gate is open, run around the tunnel towards the large head statue on the other side. If Von Croy beats Lara to this area, the gate will be closed, and the gates of the two cages below will open releasing a total of three wild boars(1, 2, 3). The only way across the pit is to SAFETY DROP into the pit, run to the left, and quickly CLIMB UP the vegetation on the side of the wall. Lara must avoid the wild boars as they will attack and injure her.

Once on the opposite side with the huge head statue, the camera angle will change to hint that Lara should enter the mouth of the statue.Lara will drop into a small room. Quickly turn right and run through the dark tunnel and up a slope. Take the first left at the top of the slope to enter the chamber that houses the Iris.
Werner takes off before finishing counting3. SPRINT2 straight forward after him to the door directly opposite the head statue. When Lara is down the hallway, take a sharp turn right and run up a slope. Do not run into a small alcove with the window ahead but follow the hallway up the slope to the left.

At the top of the slope, turn left into an outdoor clearing. Do a RUNNING JUMP over a small gap and another RUNNING JUMP onto the ledge dead ahead. If Lara times the first running jump as soon as she treads on the green vegetation on the ground, she will be able to make the second running jump onto the ledge without stopping. Continue running and try to have Lara clear the next wider gap with a RUNNING JUMP also without stopping her run.

Once on the other side of the gap, run between the two slender stone columns and drop down the ledge. The camera angle will change to a bird's eye view and show a pit to Lara's right. Turn right and quickly drop into the pit and SPRINT through an open overhead gate before Von Croy has a chance to close it. If Von Croy has already closed the gate, Lara will have to climb up the vegetation to the left of the gate and pull up into an opening that is obscured by some vegetation, then drop into the next room.

In the next smaller room, turn right and try to do a RUNNING JUMP up into small doorway in the wall. Follow the winding hallway up a slope until Lara reaches another large pit. The slow way is to run around the border of this pit. A faster way is for Lara to do a RUNNING JUMP from the edge of the pit right when she comes out the tunnel and GRAB onto the vegetation on the other side of the pit to PULL UP onto the other side. If Lara falls into the pit, she will need to use a block on the far right side of the pit to climb out of the pit.

Once on the other side, continue through another small doorway and turn right to enter a dark corridor. At the end of the corridor, turn right and Lara will find she is standing on a ledge that lies under a rope bridge above. Lara will be able to MONKEY SWING over the gap by jumping and grabbing the overhead bridge. However, the fastest way across this pit is actually to have Lara run straight off the ledge into the pit, run straight across the pit and climb up the wall on the opposite side.

Once on the other side of the pit, run down some dark stairs and do a RUNNING JUMP onto a ledge of rocks. VAULT UP to a higher ledge and turn right. WALK to the edge which is right under a stone ledge above. JUMP STRAIGHT UP and GRAB the stone ledge to PULL UP onto it. Turn right and HOP BACK once so that Lara's back is against the wall. Do a RUNNING JUMP over a gap to the ledge ahead, then a STANDING JUMP to the ledge that leads to the top side of the rope bridge.

Run across the rope bridge. If Lara is still ahead of Von Croy at this point, the double doors at the end of the rope bridge should be open. If Von Croy has beat Lara to the double doors ahead, he may be making a futile attempt to run through closed doors. If the doors are closed, simply run up to a small opening in the wall to the right and press the action button to have Lara reach in with one hand to activate a switch that opens the doors. REVERSE ROLL and run through the doors she opened. Turn right at the end of the hall and head down either the left or right slope to go around a large stone wall. On the other side of the wall, continue to run down the slope to a large chamber ahead that houses a dark spinning globe.
Lara approaches a large chamber with a spinning sphere in the middle. The markings on the sphere are exactly the same as that of a globe of the Earth. The sphere slowly rotates in a large round pit and seems to be floating above the water in the pit. At the edge of the pit lies a pink-colored stone plinth with some inscriptions carved onto it. Lara makes her way towards the plinth.

The following dialogue will vary depending on whether Lara beat Von Croy into this chamber.
Winning Dialogue
Von Croy:
And so, the pupil excels the master. I congratulate you on your agility. Take your prize from the plinth. You have earned it.
Lara:
In the time you took to find your way here, I've examined the inscriptions. It warns of vengeance on those who remove it.
Losing Dialogue
Von Croy:
Ha! I am not such an old man after all, ja? Come here, child. The mechanism will require us both to release it.
Lara:
The plinth inscription warns vengeance on those who remove it.
Von Croy:
Ah, ancient hocus pocus. Forget this nonsense and come over here!
Lara:
I don't count poison darts and triggered entombment your average child's tea party. I feel we should lend this some respect.
Von Croy:
Ah, and you are the world-famous archeologist-adventurer, Lara Croft, ja? No, no, I am the reknown archeologist-adventurer, Werner Von Croy, and you will do as I say! Go to wall, and pull the lever!
Lara:
What was it that you said? Disrespect is the route to carelessness?
Von Croy:
I am weary of this. Pull the lever now, Miss Croft.
Lara:
On your head be it, Von Croy.
As they both pull the creaking levers, the large rotating sphere in the middle of the room opens up like a flower blossom revealing a spinning orb on an ornate podium in the middle.

A bridge then unfurls toward the platform in the middle of the room. Von Croy makes his way across the bridge.
Von Croy:
Have faith in experience, child, and you will learn more than simple... (gasps)
As Von Croy reaches out and touches the Iris, the ground begins to shake.
Lara:
You were saying?
Von Croy loses his footing on the shaking platform and topples over the side. His foot gets caught in a crack in the platform. As he dangles by one foot. He cries out for help.
Von Croy:
My leg! My leg! I am trapped! My leg is trapped! Help me Lara! Help me!
Lara:
Hold on! I'm coming back to get you!
Lara sees that the sphere is once again closing, swallowing up Von Croy inside.
Lara:
Werner!
Lara has a sickening feeling as she realizes it is extremely unlikely that Werner will live through being crushed by both the sphere and the chamber caving in. She sees that the walls of the chamber are giving way all around her. Acting purely on survival instinct, she turns around and dives for the exit, just barely missing being crushed by large columns of stone crashing down to the ground.(follow plot)

  1. One of the very unique features of this level is that there are two versions of this race available depending on whether you found all the eight secret golden skulls in the previous level. If you did not pick up all the eight secrets, then Lara will have a shorter, easier race with Von Croy in the "Route of the Virtuous." The text for this easier route will show up on this walkthrough if you have the secrets feature on this site disabled.

    If you picked up all eight secrets in the previous level, Lara will find herself in a longer and much more deadly race with Von Croy using the "Path of the Heretical."   2. Since every second counts in this race, use the SPRINT button whenever you can to give Lara the extra edge on speed. The best use of SPRINT is when Lara is running in a straight line through such locations as straight hallways or over a rope bridge. If you find that Lara has run out of energy to sprint, you can take running jumps which will also hurry Lara along, though not as fast as sprinting, but more maneuverable.
