Tomb Raider III - Lara's Home / Training Level
Tomb Raider III includes a training level where Lara Croft walks you through all the various moves you must master in order to complete the game. This training level is the most extensive yet in the series. There are more rooms to explore than ever, as well as four secret areas to discover if you are attentive while Lara shows you around. Also, this training level includes both the training apparatus found in her modified ballroom from Tomb Raider I, and the assault course from Tomb Raider II.

The décor in Lara's mansion took quite a battering last year when she fought off the Fiama Nera cult which invaded her home. Since then, she had the painters and decorators come in to do a full renovation of the interior of her home. The gardeners have also revamped the hedging outside. To get started exploring her mansion, select the photograph of Lara and her butler that is titled "Lara's Home" from the Game Menu Ring.

Warning for Sony Playstation: If after you have started playing Tomb Raider III and you go back and play around with the training level, do not use the save game crystal in the menu ring. Doing so will erase all the other saved games.
The Bedroom
At the beginning of this training level, Lara is upstairs in her bedroom. As usual, she is dressed in her training outfit for her regular morning exercises. Press the forward direction key to RUN FORWARD a few steps, and Lara will extend a welcome.
Lara:
Welcome back to my humble abode. Feel free to take a look around.
Use the left and right direction controls to have Lara TURN LEFT and TURN RIGHT while running forward. Take some time to admire the new décor in her bedroom, including the renovated fireplace, her new bed, and a painting of Venice on the wall.

Beside her bed is a walk-in closet. Run up to the switch to the right of the closet door. Press the action button to have Lara use the switch which opens the closet door. Enter the closet and find a box of flares (1) on the floor inside. Position Lara over the flares and press the action button again to have Lara PICK UP the flares.
The Bathroom
Exit the closet and turn right to find Lara's bathroom. It is equipped with both a full-size bath and shower. Lara can drop into the water and WADE around inside the bath. To exit the water, go to the edge and press forward followed by the action button to climb out.
The Main Hall
Return to the bedroom and run past her bed and fireplace to exit onto a balcony overlooking the main hall. As Lara steps out of her bedroom, her faithful wind-stricken butler, Winston, will show up downstairs with a pot of hot tea. He will follow Lara around from this point on, so be careful that Lara does not crash into him as she runs around. Turn left to run around the balcony until Lara reaches the landing at the top of the stairs.
Lara:
If you want to look around, press and hold the look button. Then press in the direction you want to look.
At this point, learn to LOOK UP, LOOK DOWN, LOOK RIGHT, and LOOK LEFT.
The Kitchen
Run down the stairs to the right. At the bottom, turn left and head down the hallway to the left of the grandfather clock. Then take the first left to find the kitchen. Run past the small dining table on the left and turn left again to find a walk-in cold storage room. Press the button on the wall to the left of the door to open it. Lara can walk inside and look around. Exit the freezer and press the button again to close the door. Be careful not to lock Winston in the freezer as she leaves.

Explore the rest of the kitchen. At the opposite end of the kitchen from the cold storage room, there is a side door on the left wall that leads outside. However, it will not open until Lara approaches this door from outside the house after she completes the assault course. The door on the right wall leads to the dining room, but is locked.
The Dining Room
One of the new changes Lara made to her home during renovations was to make part of the ballroom adjacent to the kitchen into a formal dining room. Exit the kitchen and turn left to enter the dining room. Notice that Lara has moved her stereo system into this room to entertain guests during dinner. Press the button to the right of the stereo system to play some music. Then exit the dining room and return to the main hall.
The Ballroom / Gymnasium
Run down the hallway to the right of the grandfather clock and find that Lara has once again installed training equipment in her ballroom, with a few modifications from the original apparatus she had a couple of years ago.
Lara:
Let's go into the gym. Those of you who have been here before may notice the new décor. What do you think? Well, let's do some exercises. I think we should do them in order.
In order to have Lara fully explain all of her moves, it is very important to approach the ramps in numerical order as she suggested. Run up ramp #1. When Lara reaches the base of the ramp, she will give some instructions.
Lara:
I don't actually run everywhere. When I want to be careful, I walk. Hold down the walk button, and walk to the white line.
WALK FORWARD up to the top of ramp and onto the flat part of the structure.
Lara:
With the walk button down, I won't fall off, even if you try to make me. Go on, try it.
Learn to WALK FORWARD and WALK BACKWARD here. Notice that Lara can turn right and left while walking if the left and right direction keys are used while the forward key is held down. Also, use the left and right direction keys with the walk button to SIDESTEP LEFT and SIDESTEP RIGHT without fear of falling off.

From the white line, run off this first structure, and continue forward to run up ramp #2.
Lara:
If a jump is too far for me, I can grab the ledge and save myself from a nasty fall. Walk to the edge next to the white line until I won't go any further. Then press jump immediately followed by forward, and while I'm in the air, press and hold the action button.
Learn how to do a STANDING JUMP and GRAB the opposite ledge.
Lara:
Press forward, and I'll climb up.
Press forward to PULL UP onto the platform. Then move forwards onto platform #3.
Lara:
If I do a running jump, I can make a jump like that no problem. Walk to the edge with the white line until I stop. Then let go of walk and tap backwards to give me a run-up. Press forward, and almost immediately, press and hold the jump button. I won't actually jump until the last minute.
HOP BACK and practice a RUNNING JUMP here. Then hop off this structure and turn right to find ramp #4
Lara:
Okay. This is a huge jump, so do a running jump exactly as before, except while I'm in the air, press and hold the action button to make me grab the ledge.
Do a RUNNING JUMP and GRAB the edge. PULL UP to hear Lara say,
Lara:
Excellent!
Turn right and run up ramp #5.
Lara:
Try to vault up here. Press forward, and hold action. I can't climb up because the gap is too small. But press right, and I'll shimmy sideways until there is room. Then press forward and I'll climb right up.
Move up against the wall, VAULT up and GRAB the ledge. Then SHIMMY RIGHT until Lara can pull herself up.
Lara:
Well done. If there's a long drop and I don't want to hurt myself jumping off, I can let myself down carefully. Tap backwards and I'll jump off backwards. Immediately press and hold the action button, and I'll grab the ledge on the way down. Then let go.
Practice this SAFETY DROP as described by Lara.

Turn right and run up ramp #6.
Lara:
Next, I'll show you my crawl. First, vault onto the block. Now hold down the crawl button -- this will make me crouch down -- and keep holding it while using the direction buttons to move me through the gap. At the end, turn around and drop me off the ledge. Make sure to keep the action button pressed or I'll fall. Now let go.
VAULT up onto the ledge. Then, as Lara instructed, CROUCH DOWN, then press the forward key to get into the crawl position. With the crawl button still pressed down, turn right and CRAWL FORWARD into the gap. When Lara is in the gap, turn around so Lara can CRAWL BACKWARDS to the ledge. Then press the action key to have Lara slowly lower herself down. Let go of the action key to drop down to the floor.
Lara:
Push forward and hold down the crawl button to make me squeeze into the gap.
Press forward and action to have Lara jump up and pull up right into the gap. Practice this, then once again lower her backwards down to the floor. Run towards ramp #7
Lara:
To get to those really high places, sometimes I'll need to climb. Let's try that now. Walk up to the climbing frame, then press and hold the action button so I'll climb up onto it. While keeping this button pressed, push forward on the direction buttons and I'll climb to the top.
CLIMB up to the top of the frame and PULL UP to the top.
Lara:
Now looking up, you'll see some monkey bars. These look like fun. Press the jump button, then immediately hold down the action button to make me jump and grab hold of the bars. Now use the direction buttons to maneuver across. Don't let go of the action key, because as soon as you do, I'll let go.
When Lara reaches the opposite end of the monkey bars, she'll exclaim,
Lara:
That's great!
Let go of the bars, and drop down to the second climbing frame. HOP BACK off the frame and press action to GRAB the edge. Then CLIMB DOWN this frame, and head over to #8.
Lara:
Right! Let's sprint! Push forward and hold down the sprint button. When I reach the white line, press the jump button and I'll perform a diving roll.
As soon as Lara rolls across the white line, she will ask,
Lara:
Okay. Fancy a swim?
The Swimming Pool
REVERSE ROLL and head to the opposite side of the ballroom to find the entrance to the swimming pool. As Lara enters the doorway, she will give some instructions,
Lara:
The jump button and the directions move me around under water.
Notice that Lara has moved the Egyptian cat statues up from her basement to use as ornaments in the swimming pool room. Drop into the pool and practice swimming around. Lara can also do a quick flip-turn by using the REVERSE key. Finally, head up to the surface.
Lara:
Air! (Gasp) Just use forward, left, and right, to maneuver around on the surface. Press jump to dive down for another swim, or go to the edge and press action to climb out.
Practice swimming around on the surface. Also, use the walk button and left and right direction keys to do a LEFT SIDESTROKE and RIGHT SIDESTROKE. After enough practice, climb out of the pool.
Lara:
Right. Let's go and play outside.
There is still much to do and discover inside the mansion before Lara heads outside. During the renovations to her home, Lara modified the diving platform in this swimming pool area. Lara can do a SWAN DIVE off it by pressing the walk button, followed by the jump and forward buttons.
SECRET AREA #1

The Treasure Room
Lara will find a switch behind the diving platform. Press it to see a cinematic view of a secret hidden door opening out in the main hall. Run back to the main hall and find another switch that was hidden behind a bookcase. This switch opens a timed secret door on the opposite side of the main hall. To get into this room, Lara must use exact timing. Also, make sure there are no obstacles, such as Winston, in her path between the switch and the timed door. If Winston unwittingly remains in Lara's path, she can gently lead him outside the front door, then quickly run back into the house and close the door to let him enjoy some fresh air for the time being.

As soon as Lara pulls the switch, immediately press REVERSE ROLL and RUN FORWARD straight towards the opening door on the opposite side of the room. As soon as Lara runs past the base of the staircase, press the SPRINT button to give Lara an extra burst of speed. As soon as she nears the entrance to this secret room, press the jump button to do a DIVE ROLL through the door just as it is closing. It is important not to start sprinting too early, as Lara may run out of energy before she reaches the entrance. Notice that Lara must still have some energy left in the sprint energy bar in order to properly execute the dive roll.

Once Lara is inside her secret treasure gallery, she can admire the four artifacts that are prominently displayed inside. The near right corner features the Golden Mask of Tornarsuk that Lara found on an island off the coast of Alaska1. In the far right corner are the remaining fragments of the Atlantean Scion. The Dagger of Xian rests in a stasis field casing in the near left corner. The Iris artifact is displayed in the stasis field casing in the far left corner2. Finally, notice the stuffed head of a T-Rex mounted at the top of her fireplace. To exit the treasure room, Lara must push the button to the left of the door twice to keep the door open.
The Attic
Exit the treasure room and turn right. Head upstairs and to the right of the landing to find a doorway to the attic. Press the switch to the right of the door to open it. There is another button inside the doorway that can also open and close the attic door. Enter the doorway and run upstairs. Lara can light a flare to illuminate the dark stairway and attic as she looks around. When exiting the attic, leave the door open as this is very important to what Lara is about to do next.
The Music Room and the Library
After exiting the attic doorway, continue to the left to find the music room with her grand piano. Lara has just purchased a wide-screen television this year and placed it in her music room to take advantage of the acoustics here. Behind the television is the entrance to Lara's personal library.
SECRET AREA #2

The Attic
Lara's secret basement is only accessible by using a switch found in the library. The switch is disguised as a book, and Lara can find it jutting out of the bookcase opposite the fireplace. Stand in front of the book and use the action button. When Lara pulls the book out slightly by rotating it onto its spine, the flames in the fireplace will go out. This makes it safe for her to walk inside the fireplace. Face the left wall with the blackened bricks and CLIMB up the wall to reach the attic level. At the top, shift over to the right and drop into a secret room in the attic. Run forward and drop off a ledge. Turn left and drop down some steps into another room.

Run to the left and PULL out the grey crate in the corner once. Pulling out the crate is done by positioning Lara right up to the crate, pressing the action button to get Lara in a ready position, and then pressing the back direction key. (Conversely, to push a crate or other similar object, press action followed by the up arrow instead.) A box of flares (2) was hidden underneath the crate. VAULT up onto the higher ledge and find another grey crate ahead and to the right. PUSH the crate forward once to clear a path into the room that was accessible from the attic stairway.
SECRET AREA #3

The Basement
Return to the secret area in the attic and turn left to find the switch at the end of the upper ledge. Lara can use this switch to open the door that is to the right side of the grandfather clock in the main hall. This door leads to Lara's cellar. Once again, timing and speed is essential to make it into the basement as the door is timed. Pull the switch to see a cinematic view of the door to the basement opening. Press the look button to cut this cinematic view short in order to save time. Immediately REVERSE ROLL and RUN FORWARD. Turn right into the path that was once blocked by the crate, and run for the attic stairway. Turn left after Lara runs down the first two steps, and SPRINT down the rest of the stairs. Turn right at the bottom to head out the open door. Do a RUNNING JUMP over the balcony banister down to the staircase below. Once Lara is down the first few steps, immediately do a RIGHT SIDE JUMP to quickly get down to the main floor. Do a REVERSE ROLL as soon as Lara hits the ground. RUN FORWARD through the open door in the right wall of the passageway to the right of the grandfather clock.

After Lara makes it through the doorway, it will close behind her. Pick up the box of flares (3) lying on the second step. Then press the switch to Lara's right to keep the basement door open. Run down the stairs and make a hairpin turn to the right. Run down a long passageway into the next room.
The Aquarium
Lara previously kept her treasures in her basement, but while renovating, she decided to convert her basement into a reading room and a huge indoor aquarium. Lara can look over her personal collection of ancient tomes here, and admire her aquarium stocked with schools of tropical fish. Notice that lying at the bottom of the aquarium is a key

To reach the key, Lara must first locate an opening in the ceiling above the nearby grey crate. Move the crate so it is positioned just below this opening. Vault up onto the crate and look up to locate a ledge above. JUMP UP, GRAB, and PULL UP through the opening. Run forward down a hall and drop into an opening that leads into the aquarium. SWIM FORWARD around to the opposite side of the aquarium to find the Racetrack Key (4). Position Lara over the key and press action to pick it up. REVERSE and quickly return to the opening that Lara dropped in from before she runs out of breath. Pull out of the water and run back down the hall. Drop down onto the crate and run back up the stairs to the main hall.
Estate Grounds
Press the switch on the right side of the front door to open it. Run out into the front courtyard and admire the glow of the morning sky. Then TURN LEFT and run past the small wading pool. Notice a new statue of a horse has replaced the previous fish statue.
SECRET AREA #4

The Racetrack
Head towards the tall green hedge with the closed gate. Run up to the keyhole at the right of the gate and press action to select the Racetrack Key. Use the key to open the gate and run inside the hedge. Turn left and vault up onto the grey block to enter the racetrack.
Lara:
Hey! I like the look of this!
Run up to the red quad bike ahead of Lara.
Lara:
To jump on, walk up to the vehicle and press the action button.
Climb onto the quad bike and use the action button to accelerate forward.
Lara:
Let's go as fast as we can!
As soon as Lara crosses the start line, a timer will appear. Use the left and right direction buttons to steer the quad bike around the track. If Lara gets stuck in a corner, use the jump button to reverse. Remember to briefly let go of the action button to slow down as Lara negotiates the tight hairpin turns. When Lara completes the race course, she can check her best times using the stopwatch. Use the reverse button and the left or right direction keys to dismount from the bike. A respectable time to finish the assault course is about 45 seconds. However, the game designers have posted times just over 32 seconds!

Lara can also explore the racetrack by foot. The racetrack has a two levels. To get to the lower level, Lara can either use the two slopes that are part of the main race course, or she can explore a tunnel in the mansion wall that is behind the finish line. She can find this opening if she turns right immediately upon entering the race track. Run up the slope that leads to the wall and vault up into the opening. Run forward down a short tunnel to a landing and turn left. Slide down the slope to the subterranean level of the racetrack3. To return to the ground level by foot, turn left and run up the slope that leads to the finish line4.
The Assault Course
After exiting through the racetrack gate, turn left and follow the long passageway between the mansion and the tall hedge. Continue until Lara reaches the assault course.
Lara:
Let's see how quickly the assault course can be completed. Are you ready?
When Lara stands on the second step of the first wooden platform, a timer will appear. Note that each time Lara falls off any of the platforms in the assault course, she will be penalized 8 seconds from her final time. If Lara strays onto the paved area off to either side of the assault course, the timer will disappear.

A detailed run through of how the assault course is intended to be completed is as follows. From the first platform, WALK FORWARD to the edge of the platform, then HOP BACK once. WALK BACKWARDS one step so that Lara is on the lower step, then proceed to do a RUNNING JUMP onto the platform ahead. If Lara does this correctly, she can do a second RUNNING JUMP and GRAB to reach the third platform without any hesitation.

PULL up onto the third platform and do a RUNNING JUMP onto the fourth platform. Continue to run forward and jump from the edge of the platform to GRAB the fifth platform. PULL UP and run forward to SLIDE FORWARD down the slope. JUMP FORWARD off the slope just before Lara slides into a pool of water and GRAB the opposite wall with the rope mesh. This will shave seconds off Lara's total time as she can avoid wading through the water below.

CLIMB UP the rope mesh and PULL UP to the platform above. Run forward to the protruding part of the platform covered in black and stop a little behind the white line. This part of the assault course is meant for Lara to practice a forward STANDING JUMP, then a RIGHT SIDE JUMP, forward STANDING JUMP, LEFT SIDE JUMP, then a forward STANDING JUMP to the last pillar.

Angle Lara to the right and do a STANDING JUMP onto the middle part of the slope ahead. Just before Lara starts sliding off the slope, immediately JUMP FORWARD again and GRAB the rope mesh on the opposite wall. CLIMB UP to the top pull up. Take a running jump forward and GRAB the monkey bars above. MONKEY SWING to the opposite side and drop down to a sloped platform. Slide into the water to the left and SWIM FORWARD through the brick tunnel. Swim forward in the water until Lara surfaces and can WADE FORWARD in the shallow end of the pool.

Approach the climbing wall on either side and JUMP UP, GRAB and CLIMB UP the rope mesh. When Lara reaches the obstruction at the top, SHIMMY sideways to the middle. Pull up on the middle platform. RUN FORWARD and hit the WALK button just before Lara falls off the edge. Press the action button to grab hold of the rope slide. Let Lara slide down until she lets go of the handle bar at the bottom of the slide.

Run forward down a slope towards the gap below the shrubs ahead to her. CROUCH down and CRAWL FORWARD through the gap. In the middle of the gap, Lara will find a pair of pistols (5). Pick them up and continue forward until she can stand up on the opposite side.
The Target Range
Run forward to encounter a target range. Winston will appear ahead in a helmet and army fatigues. His wry sense of humor is apparent as he has cheekily painted a bullseye on his flak jacket. Be careful not to hit Winston as Lara works through the target range. If Lara accidentally aims or shoots at Winston, he will raise up his tea tray to deflect the bullets.

Stay on the grass and move slowly ahead to trigger the seven pop-up targets. Each target has three bullseyes. Lara will be penalized 10 seconds for any target where she does not hit all three bullseyes. Also, if Lara does not shoot all the bullseyes on a target within a short period of time, the target will collapse and she will be penalized for not completing the target. Thus, it is best for her to completely shoot all three bullseyes on a target before moving forward to trigger the next targets.

After Lara has finished at the target range, run forward to the archway and SPRINT towards the finish line marked with the two Union Jacks. A respectable time to finish the assault course is about two and a half minutes. However, the game designers have posted times around 2:00 minutes!

Lara can once again use the stopwatch to check her best times on the assault course. Also, once she is finished the assault course the first time, the gate in the wall near the shooting range will open, as well as the side door that leads into the kitchen.
Climbing on top of the Mansion Roof
For some unconventional exploring around the mansion grounds, Lara will need to use a special move that can only be used in a certain type of corner (known as the "corner bug"). Return to the tower with the zip line. From the shallow pool, climb to the top of the rope slide platform. WALK to the edge of the platform and SIDESTEP RIGHT until Lara is against the right column. Angle Lara forty-five degrees towards the mansion wall and press and hold the jump button. Lara will repeatedly jump in place up and down until it appears that the right side of her body is partially embedded in the wall (usually after the second jump if done correctly). After this happens, on the next jump up, she will jump right to the top of the column! From the top of the right column, she can take a STANDING JUMP to a red square on top of the left column5.

WALK to the far left corner of the red square that is closest to the mansion chimney. Angle Lara so she is facing the corner of the roof that slopes down. HOP BACK and take a RUNNING JUMP so that Lara lands just at the top of the slope without sliding down. Once Lara is on top of the roof, she can explore the whole roof and enjoy a bird's eye view of the mansion grounds.
The Balcony
One way Lara can safely get down from the roof with minimal damage is to make her way down to the balcony outside her bedroom. Find the corner of the roof overlooking the balcony and SLIDE BACKWARDS down the wide slope. GRAB the edge at the end and drop down to a second more narrow slope to land on the balcony. After admiring her potted plants, Lara must jump over the balcony railing to get back to the ground below.
Outside the Estate Front Gates
The final area left to explore in the training level is the area outside the front gates. Press the button to the left of the front gates to open the left gate. Run through the gate and Lara will say,
Lara:
Now it's time for our third adventure!
If Lara slowly walks forward out of the gate, she will have some time to look around the scenery outside the mansion walls. Move forward a little more and the training level will automatically end.

Footnotes:
  1. Rich Morton, lead level designer for TR3, confirmed that this gold idol is an "inside joke" which is a cross between the gold idol Indiana Jones found at the beginning of "Raiders of the Lost Ark", and the face of Eidos producer Mike Schmitt. We asked Phil Campbell, project leader for the Tomb Raider 2 Gold: Golden Mask levels, if the gold idol here was intended to represent the Golden Mask. He replied that TR3 and its treasure room was long published before he even wrote "The Golden Mask of Tornarsuk". However, we at the Traveler's Guide think this coincidence is too good to be true, and will take this gold idol to represent the Golden Mask of Tornarsuk for the sake of continuity.

  2. When asked about this artifact, Rich Morton tells us, "The other artifact (the spinning orb) is the Iris, an item from one of Lara's past adventures. It could appear in a future TR game though."

  3. The slope from this mansion wall tunnel can serve as an alternative route that Lara can drive up using the quad bike.

  4. Ian Taylor reports that it is possible to get the quad bike out of the racetrack in the PlayStation version of Tomb Raider 3, but this needs hours of practice. The general idea is to have Lara gather enough speed on the bike to jump from the green hedge opposite the starting line to the grey block near the gate. So far, Ian found that it is impossible to get the quad bike out of the racetrack in the PC CD version of TR3. Apparently, the speed of the quad bike in the PC version is about one-third slower than PSX version, so that is likely the reason it is more difficult for PC players to get the quad bike to reach the grey block. However, PC players can use a patched saved game on a downloadable demo version of TR3 to get the quad bike out of the racetrack. See Theresa's TR3 Site for more details.

  5. In Tomb Raider 3, Lara is not able to jump down to the mansion wall as she could in the Tomb Raider 2 training level. However, she can get to the top of the tall green hedge surrounding the racetrack from the roof. To do this, drop down to the roof above the swimming pool, and take a running jump over to the top of the tall green hedge. This is a method of entering the racetrack without using the Racetrack Key. However, Lara will not be able to exit the racetrack if she did not open the gate.
