Madubu Gorge |
Items: 20 |
Kills: 16 |
| The Madubu Gorge is an incredibly lush level with many branches, but all forks lead to the same ending, so this is a pretty straightforward level if only you can manage to stay alive. Here are a few hints that might help. | |||
Lizard Breath
You're about to encounter a new enemy, and they're not the bats. Watch out for the strange reptiles. Their breath is poisonous.
Decisions Decisions
The river takes may different paths. It doesn't matter which one you choose, because they will all dump you down into the same cavern. The hints below will follow the path that we've chosen for out walkthrough which is the longest path and has a few more pickups than the other paths.
River Crossing
Note that if Lara falls into any white water rapids she will die instantly. There is a block in the middle of the river, that will allow you access to the other side. However all the ledges that you can reach are too steep to walk on. Good thing Lara has plenty of other moves besides walking or running that she can employ.
Crossing River
Now that you're on the other side, you have to get back. Now a tricky flip will get you back to the block in the middle of the river, but that's not where you want to go if you're planning to take the scenic route to the end of this level. Look up and check out the strange vegetation on the ceiling. Those plants look strong enough to hang from. Once you're on the other side, there's just a little jumping and shimmying remaining to get you inside the tunnel.
Doorbell
Inside the cave, notice the closed wooden gate on the left. All you have to do is get it open. Explore the tunnels to find the button that opens it. Watch out for one of the drops, you'll need to do a little fancy jumping to avoid sliding into a field of sharp spikes. On your way back, you may wonder how you're supposed to get up the ledges. Look to the left at those strange dark pits in the wall. Yup, you can use them as hand/foot holds.
Kayaking
Through the open wooden gate, you will find yourself high above the river with waterfalls all around. Enjoy the view, but look ahead and down. Notice the crystal behind the waterfall ahead. You need to get there to get to the kayak. There are two paths to reach that cove. One path involves a secret, so we're not going to tell you anymore about it. The other is a fairly simple matter of a couple of jumps along flat ledges of the waterfalls. Be aware that although we mentioned that falling into white water rapids will result in instant death, falling into any water with strong currents will also result in death, only it will be as a result of drowning or getting eaten by piranha.
Shoot the Rapids
From the ledge with the crystal, you'll do some swinging, some climbing, and then you'll find the kayak. Be sure to clear the water of enemies before diving in. Use the calm area to practice your kayaking skills. You won't have any time to learn once you're on the rapids. There are ropes that are strung across the river. Red ropes generally indicate that Lara has activated a trap, while green ropes disable traps or do something else benign. Lara will take damage from long drops over waterfalls, so back paddle to slow her descent. If you fail to avoid blades or spikes, paddle forward to get past them as fast as possible to minimize damage. Don't let the water current make you think that some place is impossible to get to. Lara can paddle the kayak up some of the rapids.
River Fork #1
The first place the river forks, we recommend you go right. Lara will have to take damage going left, whereas it's at least possible to avoid damage on the right. In the tunnels on the right, the river will sort of fork again. We chose the right path once again to avoid some poison darts.
River Fork #2
The next major fork in the river is at the structure at the end of the rope slide. If you go right, you will need to negotiate some spikes, but if you go left, you can try to pick up a crystal. You'll have to do some upstream paddling on the left track to get to the cavern that the right fork takes you to.
Overboard
From the large cavern with the chain, you need to fight some currents up to a small pool where Lara can, more or less safely, get out of the kayak. From there, you have some swinging to do. Watch the fire breathing statues. Use the look key to help get as close as possible, and then get moving as soon as the flames begin to recede.
Climb This!
When you get to the ledge, you just need to take a jump across the river. From there, you can climb up some ledges and drop down the other side. Now to continue you need to recognize that the wall on the right is scalable. After that, you have more swinging to do.
Back Up
After all that splashing down the river, you're finding that now you have to climb your way back upstream. After taking a jump across the river you will find yourself on a small ledge in front of a field of spikes. Notice the funny markings on the opposite wall. Time to do another fly-on-the-wall imitation. When you get to the top, watch out for that drop down the shaft. It's a doozie.
Head and Boulders
In the next tunnel, notice the boulders looming ominously ahead. They will certainly roll down, and you need to make use of a new method of avoiding them. It has to do with one of Lara's new moves.
Road Taken Twice
Well, here you are once again, and now you have to make your way down the river on foot instead of in the kayak. You can't jump from the ledge on the right wall to the ledge further along the right wall. You should be quite familiar with those markings on the wall by now. After a few jumps and a slide down the rope, you'll be inside the structure at the fork in the river.
Pull the Plug
The back wall with the strange faces is scalable. Get to the higher platform of the structure to find the lever that pulls up the drain plug. Watch for enemies while you're up there. After that, it's back to the kayak to go down the drain. Make sure you have enough health to survive the fall.
What a Croc
Watch for the crocodile in the water. There's an underwater lever underneath the closed wooden gate. After you pull it not only will the gates be opened, but two more crocs will enter the pool
