Crash Site

Lara will begin still in the tree house with the soldier asleep on the cot. Exit this room to the balcony and turn left. Run off the ledge to drop to a slope below and Lara will slide to the ground. If Lara attempts to turn left and head back to the village, an earthquake will cause rocks to fall into the pass. Instead, turn right and head toward the swamp.

The swamp is sixteen blocks long with fifteen patches of vegetation on it. Some patches are merely floating in quicksand, while others identify locations that are safe to tread on. Use the swamp map that the Australian gave Lara to determine which ones are safe1. Walk out as far as possible without falling into the quicksand.

Have Lara turn left and walk forward until she reaches the green triangular ledge [3,1] that juts out into the swamp. Take a standing jump to the first patch of vegetation that is over one block to the right and ahead two. Take a running jump to the next patch that is ahead three blocks and over one [8,3]. Turn and face squarely right. Angle Lara a little further to the right and take a running jump to the next patch that is two blocks to the right and three blocks ahead [6,6]. Turn right and take a running jump to the next patch that is two blocks forward and one block to the left [3,7]. Turn left and take a running jump to the next patch that is ahead three blocks and over to the right one [2,10]. Angle to the left and take a standing jump to the next patch that is diagonally over two blocks [4,12]. Face the far end of the swamp and angle left. Take a running jump to the next patch that is over three blocks and ahead two [7,14].
SECRET #1
Turn and face the far end of the swamp and angle to the left. Take a standing jump [9,16] to the last patch in the corner of the swamp. Climb up into the alcove, which is SECRET #1, and pick up MP5 clips (1). Step deeper into the alcove and pick up more MP5 clips (2). Drop out of the alcove onto the last patch of vegetation. Take a standing jump diagonally to the left, back to the previous patch of vegetation.
Turn and face the end of the swamp. Angle to the right and take a running jump to clear the swamp. Walk forward through the trees until Lara comes to the top of a slope. Side step to the left until Lara is one block away from the rocks. Angle left and take a running jump to the flat ledge. Collect the grenades (3). Drop off the ledge and run forward down the steps. Draw weapons and take out a raptor (1) that will attack from the right.

When the raptor is dead, run down the misty pass, through the shallow pond until Lara comes to a cave. Vault up into the cavern and run to the back right corner. Climb onto the block and turn left. Take a standing jump and grab to reach the higher ledge. Climb into the passage ahead and turn right. Run forward and drop down into the valley below. Ahead is the large transport plane. Turn left and step forward and draw weapons to take out another raptor (2) that will emerge from behind the tree2.

Take out the raptor and turn around. Run forward to the nose of the plane. Turn left and run past the tree and just beyond the tree, run into the tunnel on the right and drop into the hole. Run forward and climb up. Pick up MP5 clips (4) that are on this ledge on the right. In the clearing beyond is an Australian soldier (3) with a tree on the left and three trees on the right. If Lara kills the soldier she can collect MP5 Clips (5) from his body, but if she leaves him alone he will help her fight enemies. Draw weapons and run forward. Two raptors (4, 5) will attack, one from the left ahead and one from the right behind. Lara can climb up onto the ledge on the right to shoot at the raptors from safety.

When the raptors are dead, face the right side of this clearing with three trees. Run to the edge of the clearing and climb onto the ledge. Turn around and take a standing jump and grab to reach the branch of the tree above. Turn right and step forward to pick up a large Medi Pack (6).
SECRET #2
Walk all the way to the end off this branch and side step to the left. Take a standing jump forward to the next branch, which will be SECRET #2 and pick up a box of flares (7).
Drop to the ground and run toward the large cavern. Slide down to the lower area and four procompsognathids (6, 7, 8, 9) will emerge and scavenge a dead raptor in the middle of the cavern. Draw weapons and take them out and jump around to avoid them. Run forward, directly away from the slope that Lara just slid down, to the back wall. Climb onto a ledge on the back wall and collect a small Medi Pack (8). Turn around and drop off the ledge. Turn left and run forward to the pool. There, turn right again and head toward the mound in the far end of the cave. Turn right and climb up onto a small ledge just inside of the cavern to collect a small Medi Pack (8). Drop back to the ground and run to the top of the mound.
Commander Bishop's Key
& Tyrannosaurus Rex
On top of the mound, Lara will find the body of Commander Bishop. Turn and face out of this cavern. When Lara picks up Commander Bishop's Key (9), a Tyrannosaurus Rex (10) will arrive, a steel gate will open on the far end of the tunnel beyond the raptor carcass, and the torch near that gate will light. Run forward down the mound and wade into the water until Lara is standing in waist deep water. The T-Rex will not attack Lara if she is waist deep in the water. Draw weapons and kill the T-Rex3.

When the T-Rex is dead, run back to the first cavern with the dead raptor. Run past the raptor to the open gate and pick up a box of flares (10). Run into the open gate and pull the lever to open a second steel gate and light the torch near it. Reverse roll and run back to the pool. To the left of the pool in the corner is the gate that Lara just opened. Run to the corner and pick up some flares (11). Enter the open gate and pull the second lever to open the gate next to the first lever to allow access back to the upper clearing.

Another raptor (11) will appear in the clearing. If the soldier is still alive he will keep the raptor occupied, otherwise it will run down the newly opened gate to attack. If the raptor comes down the tunnel, Lara can climb up to one of the small ledges to shoot at it from a safe location. If not, Lara can shoot at the raptor as he dances around the soldier by jumping up and down. Run back across the pool toward the cavern with the raptor carcass. Enter the alcove and turn left. Step forward to collect a box of flares (12) and a small Medi Pack (13). Run up to the tunnel and turn left and run forward to return to the clearing. Turn right and run to the far right corner. Vault up into the ledge and drop back into the hole. Run forward and climb up the other side of the hole.

Run forward along the right side of the crash site. Lara will need to take a jump over a ledge. Turn right when Lara reaches the tree and enter a dark tunnel. Drop into the hole and light a flare to improve visibility. Step forward and pick up MP5 clips (14). Run to the end of the tunnel and turn left to enter a courtyard and the gate will close behind Lara as she steps inside. Five compys (12, 13, 14, 15, 16) will attack from various alcoves in this room4. Kill them quickly and then collect MP5 Clips (15) and a large Medi Pack (16). Now run to the right and pull the lever in the alcove on the right. Exit the alcove and run diagonally cross the courtyard to a dark alcove and pull a second alcove to open the gate.

Exit the courtyard and turn right. Run to the end of tunnel and turn left. Climb up out of the tunnel. Lara will hear the sounds of fighting. Quickly take a jump up to the flat ledge to right of the tree and slide down the other side. Lara will find two soldiers (17, 18) fighting a raptor (19). If Lara or the raptor kills the soldiers she can collect a pair of MP5 clips (17, 18) from each of them.

The stream ahead will sweep over a high waterfall. Instead, enter the tunnel near the waterfalls on the right. Run inside and turn right and back to the left to exit the tunnel to another area. Run forward past the tree Lara will find an area divided by a stream and guarded by a soldier (20). A raptor (21) will attack the soldier from the left, so take it out quickly or climb onto the ledge on the right to shoot at it from a safe vantage point. If the soldier is killed, collect MP5 Clips (19) from his body.

If Lara attempts to cross the bridge, it will collapse and dump Lara in piranha infested waters. Turn instead and face away from the water and vault up onto the low ledge to the left of the tree. Climb up to the higher ledge and turn around. Draw weapons and jump up and down to target and kill a raptor (22) that's hiding in the branches above. When it's dead, turn right and face the vines that are growing up the side of the rock face. Climb up the vines and when Lara reaches the top, jump off the rock face. Keep the jump key depressed, and Lara will leap off a steep slope and back flip onto the branch.

Turn right and walk toward the trunk of the tree. Angle Lara to the left and take a standing jump to a rocky ledge. Turn right and take a standing jump up to a small triangular ledge. Turn right and Lara should be able to take a standing jump up to a branch above the triangular ledge. Draw weapons and take out a raptor (23) that's running around in the branches to the right. Take a standing jump forward to a rock ledge to collect a crystal (20). Turn right and take a standing jump to the branch.
SECRET #3
Turn left and walk up the branch to where it turns upwards. Angle Lara to the left5 and take a standing jump and grab to reach the the highest branch. Pull up onto SECRET #3, and walk forward and to the right. Pick up MP5 clips (21), and turn around and walk back to the main branch and slide back down to the lower part of the branch. Walk forward and turn left.
Walk out onto the branch that extends out toward the raptor carcass that's hanging over the river. Draw weapons and shoot out the chain and it will fall into the water below. The piranha will attack the raptor and now Lara can swim through the water without fear of being eaten by the piranha. Turn left and take a running jump to the grass covered ledge on the left. Turn left and walk forward and collect a small Medi Pack (22).

Dive into the water and swim to the underwater lever near the bridge. Pull it to open a gate that leads into the temple. Swim along the bank of the stream along the same side as the lever. Pull up at the one place where the ground is low enough to pull up. Draw weapons and kill a raptor (24) that will emerge from the newly opened gate. Draw weapons, run forward into the gate and a second raptor (25) will lunge out. Back flip out of the doorway and to the right while firing to kill the second raptor. Try back flipping into the water to safety if either raptor is too much to handle.

Enter the temple, and the gate inside the dark room are three levers. Two levers are on the back wall and one on the right. The three levers open a wooden platform above. The first lever on the left side of the back wall will open the exit gate and another raptor (26) will enter. Reverse roll and take it out by jumping around in this tight room. The next lever on the right side of the back wall has no visible effects. When Lara pulls the last lever, the wooden trapdoor will drop open and two raptors (27, 28) will rush into the room. Draw weapons and take out the raptors while jumping around to avoid their attacks.
Lt. Tuckerman's Key
Vault up onto the platform and then jump and climb up onto the platform above. On the platform above, Lara will find the body of Lieutenant Tuckerman. Collect the crystal6 (23), and walk over to the far right corner. Turn around and face away from the corner. Pick up Lt. Tuckerman's Key (24) and draw weapons. A raptor (29) will appear out of nowhere. Take out the raptor and drop to the floor of the room below. Exit the temple and dive into the water. Swim to the right, toward the waterfall.

Swim across to the other side and pull up out of the water to the right side of the tree. Run forward to the corner and turn left. Run forward and turn right and enter the tunnel to return to the crash site. Follow the tunnel as it turns right and then back to the left and opens back out onto the crash site.

Turn left and run toward the flat ledge to the left of the tail of the plane. Vault onto the ledge and run forward to slide down onto the ground beyond the ridge. Run forward toward the nose of the airplane, and take a hairpin turn to the right around the tree that the plane crashed into7.

Run forward toward the tree to the left of the plane. Stand at the highest point on the small hill behind the tree. Angle Lara left and face the small triangular rock ledge and take a standing jump to it. Turn right and take a standing jump and grab to reach the moss covered ledge above. Turn right and take a standing jump and grab to reach the handholds on the underside of the branch.

Swing forward until Lara reaches the the tree trunk. Release and drop to a branch below. Turn left and walk diagonally to the left along the branch and then turn back to the right when Lara reaches the end of the branch. Take a running jump and grab to reach the handholds in the side of the tree trunk. Climb up the tree and pull up to the flat ledge above. Turn left and jump up and grab the handholds in the branch above.

Swing forward until Lara reaches the end of the handholds. Release and Lara will fall down to a flat ledge below. If Lara swings all the way to the very end, then she will likely fall onto a sloped ledge. In that case she will need to grab the edge and shimmy to the right and pull up. Turn right and walk forward up the ledge. Side step to the right and hop back to hang from the ledge.

Lara will find footholds, so climb all the way down until Lara is just hanging by her hands. Shimmy to the left until Lara can pull up onto a flat rock ledge. Run forward and turn right. Crouch down and crawl forward into the crawlspace. Follow the tunnel as it turns left. When the crawlspace widens, crawl to the left again. When Lara can stand up, turn right and drop to the floor of this small cave.

Turn right, run forward, and climb up onto the ledge. Reverse roll and grab the bars on the ceiling. Swing forward and follow the bars as they take a hairpin turn around to the right. Release when Lara reaches the the small tunnel that leads to another tall cavern. Drop down to the ledge below the tunnel and turn right. Run forward and enter the alcove on the right and pull the lever to change the position of two of the wooden gates.

Side step to the right and run forward and climb back up to the small tunnel on the left. Turn around, jump up, and swing all the way forward to the until Lara is against the far wall. Release and immediately grab the rock face. Climb down until Lara is below the alcove. Shift to the left until Lara can climb up and pull into the alcove. Pull the second lever to raise a third wooden platform.

Hop backwards out of the alcove and Lara will slide down. Grab the bottom edge of the slope. Pull up and jump to back flip onto the top of a rock column to collect a crystal (25). Turn around and take a running jump back up to the ledge under the small tunnel. Turn left and enter the first alcove and raise the lever to return the first two wooden platforms to their original positions. Side step to the right and run forward and climb back up into the small tunnel. Reverse roll and jump up to grab the bars overhead.

Follow the bars and swing forward, turn left at the small wooden platform. Swing forward, turning left, then right three times around the rock column. Swing all the way to the end of the bars, but instead of heading toward the newly raised wooden platform, turn right and face the rock column instead. Swing forward until Lara is against the rock column. Release and immediately grab the rock face and climb down, past the alcove on the right that is blocked by a metal grate, until Lara is at the very bottom of this rock column, but still using her feet to hold on.

Jump to take a back flip onto a ledge. Turn around and run forward to pull the switch on the right. Turn right and walk forward to the very edge of the ledge. Take a standing jump and grab to return to the rock column. Climb up and shift to the right when Lara is beneath a newly opened metal grate. Climb up and pull up into the alcove that was formerly blocked. Turn around and angle Lara to the right. Take a running jump to the sloped ledge beneath the second lever. Lara will slide backwards, so grab the bottom of the ledge. Shimmy to the right until Lara is directly beneath the second switch. Pull up and immediately jump to back flip onto the central rock column.

Turn around and take a running jump back up to the ledge under the small tunnel. Climb up into the small tunnel. Reverse roll and jump up to grab the bars. Now swing all the way to the end by swinging forward, turning left twice, and right three times, and left once more. Swing forward and Lara can release inside another cavern.

Turn right and run forward and collect a pair of Uzi clips (26). Turn right and climb onto the ledge. Turn left and climb up into the next passage. Run forward to the end of this passage. Take a running jump and grab she an reach an upper branch of the tree. Pull up and take a standing jump onto what's left of the wing, and run forward onto the top of the air carrier. Run forward onto the fuselage and turn right. Run forward to the hole and take a standing jump over it.

Draw weapons, reverse roll and run forward to drop into the hole on top of the plane. A raptor (30) will emerge from the compartment ahead. Take it out quickly by jumping forward over it as it attacks and reverse rolling to keep Lara's guns trained on it. Collect the MP5 Clips (27) after the raptor is dead. Turn around and run into the cockpit of the plane and turn around. There are two locks to either side of the cockpit door. Use Commander Bishop's key in the left lock and Lt. Tuckerman's key in the right doorway. With both keys in place the plane's cockpit will light up.

Exit the cockpit, run to into the left opening into the rear cabin of the plane. Drop into the lower cargo hold and reverse roll. Notice the mounted rocket launcher, and run forward through the open doorway. Make a hairpin turn to the right and throw the switch to open loading doors in the tail of the plane and to roll the the rocket launcher out of the tail of the plane.

Run forward to the rocket launcher and thirty raptors (31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60) will emerge from various alcoves around the crash site and attack. Lara can use the rocket launcher to indiscriminantly take out the raptors and any soldiers that may have survived to this point. The raptors can still attack Lara when she is firing the rocket launcher. Lara can also take a couple of back flips into the cargo bay of the plane to slowly and safely kill the raptors with her own weapons. The raptors will not enter the plane.

When all the raptors are dead, use the rocket launcher and aim at the large brick walls in the far left corner of the crash site. Fire rockets to blast through both the wall on the left and right of the corner pillar. Dismount the rocket launcher and run out to the left, onto the broken off wing of the transport plane. Walk out to the very tip of the wing. Take a standing jump, over the stream, to the ledge. Turn left and run forward to the end of the ledge.

Turn right and climb up onto the higher ledge. Take a standing jump up to the area on the right. Run forward and collect a crystal (28) and a large Medi Pack (29). Turn around and head back toward the blown out wall. Angle to the right and take a running jump through the adjacent blown out wall, to the ledge beyond and run forward.





Lara enters a large stone temple and walks down the corridor into a quiet stone room illuminated by torches. Lara scans the room to find an altar flanked by two large statues. Behind the altar is a large Polynesian style painting with smaller paintings encircling it. Suddenly Lara hears the sound of a loud slap of flesh on flesh and a guttural chanting. She swings around to locate the source of the voice. The voice belongs to a dark tribesman in the corner of the prayer room. He is doing some kind of ritual dance and chanting, "Hoombada. Hoombada." The tribesman is slapping his thighs and beating his chest. When he sees Lara, he looks her over and smacking his lips he tells her8, "Is well fa you me fasting dis day. You make plenty good flesh-pot."

Lara sizes him up and decides to call his threat, "You forget. I might be quite hungry myself. Famished actually."

The tribesman grunts with contempt, "Uah!"

Lara looks back over the paintings, points to a drawing of men fleeing by canoe and asks, "Why did your ancestors flee from Antarctica so suddenly?"

The warrior remains crouched in the corner with his hands on his thighs and replies, "Koma-Koma, bad place. Plenty flesh, but fa da price of evil. Mutilation! Da sixth leader, Mauki wa born widout face. Terrible storms. Men afraid. Ran! Set curse of Mauki on da land. No one go there now."

Lara examines the central painting, which is a fiery meteorite with four artifacts below it. Lara asks the warrior, "You still worship it?"

The warrior grins and replies, "White fella later com here wit magic Koma-Koma stone. Inna day we celebrate da death of heem. Da feast of Smythe."

Lara recognizes the name, "One of Darwin's sailors. Poor fool." Lara turns to the warrior to ask, "Where is the stone now?"

The warrior is now just squatting in the corner, chanting and rocking on the balls of his feet. Lara decides that she's not getting any more answers from him, so she turns and walks away. He finally look sup and warns her, "He lucky fella dat keel you. A plenty Mary like you."

Lara is unphased and answers to the warrior, "I'll be sure to point that out to him." She turns and exits through another corridor leading out the right of the prayer room. (follow plot)

Footnotes:
  1. The map is not altogether clear, and our directions are relative to the direction that Lara is currently facing. To try to clear things up, I've included some coordinates. The first coordinate is the width of the swamp, which is 1 on the right and 9 on the left. The second coordinate describes the length of the swamp, which starts at 1 on the ledge that Lara can stand on and goes to 16. Which is the far end of the swamp. If this is all too confusing for you, please refer to our swamp map with coordinates.

  2. At this point, You are supposed to move onto the rest of the crash site, but the sequence that leads to the top of the transport plane is quite long and tedious. Since it's still early in the level, you might want to figure it out and to follow the long path to the top of the air-carrier now while this level is fresh and you are more motivated, and use the short cut, as described in footnote #6 below, when you're ready to get onto the cargo plane. If you want to follow that path, jump to the paragraph that begins with, "Run forward toward the tree to the left of the plane." When you are done, instead of jumping onto the plane, slide to the ground and run forward around the plane.

  3. Instead of fighting the T-Rex yourself, you can enlist the help of the raptors to take down the T-Rex. Simply kill the soldier in the clearing above or allow the two raptors to mangle him, and then slide down to the T-Rex nest. After picking up Bishop's Key, run and pull both levers. When Lara pulls the second lever, three raptors will rush down the tunnel and attack the T-Rex. Climb onto one of the ledges where you had collected small Medi Packs from for a safe front-row view of the carnage. The T-Rex is also easily distracted by flares. Light a flare and toss it to the side, and the T-Rex will stop to check it out. You can then run behind its tail while it's facing away.

  4. Tim Morrow tells me that seven compys emerge from the alcoves and attack. In the four or five times I've played through this room, no more than 5 compy's have ever come out. If you get seven, then you will have 2 more kills to your totals than I do.

  6. Players of the PC version may want to wait until after dealing with the next raptor before picking up this crystal. Sony Playstation players who are having difficulties with this raptor can immediately drop to the safety of the floor below. To take out the raptor from the safety of the floor, jump up and down on the pedestal and shoot at the raptor from the top of each jump.

  7. Instead of bothering with all the climbing and swinging required to get onto the plane, you can take a shortcut onto the top of the cargo plane, by running forward and to the side of the cargo plane. Run forward until Lara reaches the door on the side of the plane. Take a standing jump up to the ledge in front of the door. Jump up and grab the edge of the fuselage. Shimmy to the left until Lara reaches the nose of the cargo plane. Pull up and run forward onto the nose of the plane. Turn right and take a standing jump over the cockpit of the plane. Once you're on top of the plane, you can jump to the paragraph that begins with, "Draw weapons, reverse roll and run forward to drop into the hole on top of the plane." only you will not need to reverse roll because you're already facing the right way.

I typed up the dialogue with the tribesman's accent intact. There was plenty to eat there, but for the price of evil. Mutilation! The sixth leader, Mauki was born without a face. After that, there were terrible storms.
