Nevada Desert
Items: 32
Kills: 29
Lara Croft is sitting alone in first class of a Boeing 757 bound for Henderson, Nevada1. Lara had just visited Las Vegas within the past year, but had she flown back into Las Vegas this trip, she wouldn't be afforded the privacy she is currently enjoying. She is clearly disturbed and it can be heard in her voice as she talks into the skyphone. (Skip down to walkthrough)

Lara is on the skyphone with Dr. Willard. Willard seems to have a knack for melodrama. He insisted to brief Lara only when she is en route to Nevada. "...What do you mean, that's all you know?" Lara asks, raising her voice into the phone.

"It's like I told ye," Willard replies.

"No, tell me the whole story. This time from the beginning," Lara demands.

Willard complies, "Barr's journal records that Jonson's untimely demise takes place shortly after Caulfield's death while the HMS Beagle was still anchored at Tierra Del Fuego. The men were collecting samples in the Patagonia region of Chile when they were ambushed by some Tehuelches tribesmen. The Tehuelches killed Jonson and dragged his body away into the mountains. It was particularly unusual since the Tehuelches tribe had been formerly known as being quite a peaceful people. Anyhow, they found what was left of Jonson's body, but the artifact was gone."

"So how was the artifact located?" Lara asks.

"Well, that's where this story gets interesting," Willard continues. "The artifact was basically lost until the 1970's. You know that from 1932 through 1973 Chile was an electoral democracy." Willard pauses to listen of Lara is still paying attention.

Lara grunts, "Yes I know this. Get on with the history lesson."

Willard continues, "The people of Chile elected Salvador Allende as president in 1970. Allende was now the first and only Marxist in the Western Hemisphere. Soon, the Chileans could not tolerate Allende's rule, while simultaneously the United States was concerned by the encroachment of Marxism into the western hemisphere. At the command of US President, Richard Nixon, CIA agents were sent into Chile to promote a coup d'etat in Chile, in an operation that was code-named 'FUBELT'. In September of 1973, with military support provided by the US Department of Defense, the Chilean military junta overthrew the Chilean government and Augusto Pinochet was placed into power, ousting Allende."

Just as Lara is wondering about the point of this history lesson, Willard makes the connection, "Declassified documents state that the US involvement was to crush Marxism in the West, but my sources tell me long before Allende was elected into power, US CIA agents discovered that the Chilean government was in the possession of a rare element of unknown origins which had military applications. Apparently Chilean anthropologists that were studying the Tehuelches people found the artifact and brought it to the attention of their government. While the country was busy recovering from a revolution, FBI and CIA agents in Chile appropriated the artifact and any technology that the Chilean government may have developed."

"You're telling me that a bloody military coup that turned South America's oldest democracy into a seventeen year martial rule was to conceal the extraction of this artifact?"

"Declassified documents indicates involvement of the US National Security Council, the Department of Defense, and the FBI as well as the Department of State in the coup," Willard mentions. "I canna say for certain, but there certainly a possibility that this fact was hidden from the public."

Lara asks in amazement. "So how did you trace it to Nevada?"

"Well," Willard pauses, "When I started to investigate the whereabouts of the artifact, I found a reference to it in a journal article that the Chilean anthropologists published. I could not get any information about the artifact until just recently when I located a source in the United States, who calls himself the 'Desert Rat'..."

"Desert... Rat?" Lara asks skeptically.

Willard clears his throat, "He tells me that the US government transferred the artifact directly to a research facility in Nevada. That's where it is now."

"So do you think they would give it to me if I asked nicely?" Lara shoots to Willard sarcastically. A flight attendant wanders by and asks if Lara would like glass of wine. Lara politely refuses, and continues into the phone, "Give me a good reason to infiltrate a high security U.S. military installation to get you your precious artifact."

Willard's tone gets deadly serious, "Look here, what that artifact did to Tony is just the tip of the iceberg. We haven't begun to realize the full potential of this unknown substance. The Chilean government knew it had military significance. The US government knows it as well. What I'm trying to say is this: if someone manages to find a way to develop a weapon using this substance, the results might well make Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like a picnic! I'm not willing to take that chance, are you?"

Lara is silent as she weighs her options. She is familiar with accounts of the sudden onset of aberrant behavior in the Tehuelches people that lasted several generations. Lara's intuition tells her there's some truth to Willard's words. After thinking it over, Lara finally sighs, "I'll try..."

Willard sighs back, "Don't try. Find it. I've given your description to my informant. He will meet you at the airport." Willard hangs up.

Lara is more troubled now than ever, but she is still determined. There's definitely more to these artifacts than mere scientific curiosity. A voice over the plane's intercom announces that the passengers and flight attendants should prepare for arrival.

Lara disembarks the plane and steps down the jetway to the terminal. The waiting area is fairly deserted. Lara looks around as a thin seedy-looking man with long tangled blonde hair and a goatee walks up to Lara.

"And you would be?" Lara asks.

"Desert Rat," the man whispers.

"Of course," Lara says, under her breath. "I suppose I'm to go with you?" She asks him.

"My car is parked in the garage," he tells him and starts to walk away.

Lara follows him past security, down to baggage claim, "Just a moment," Lara tells him. They walk past the baggage carousels to a baggage claim counter. Lara hands the attendant a claim ticket. The man asks to see some identification, and Lara shows him her passport. He turns and walks into a back room and emerges with a medium sized plain cardboard box. He pushes a release form across the counter to Lara. She examines it, writes her initials at various places, and finally signs the bottom. He takes the form back and hands Lara the package. Lara smiles and says, "Thanks."

They proceed out of the baggage claim area to the parking garage to where Desert Rat has parked his car. Lara looks at the old Ford Pinto. Its original color was probably beige, but now it's covered with large patches of primer grey and one of the front fenders has apparently been replaced from a junk yard and is a forest green. Lara looks at the car, then at the man, then back at the car, and back at the man and asks him, "This is just a little too stereotypical, isn't it?"

He stares blankly at her and answers, "I don't know what you mean". He climbs into the drivers seat and pulls up the lock on the passenger side. Lara opens the door for herself and climbs into the car. The vinyl seats are torn and have been repaired with grey duct tape. She looks into the back seat to find a towel tossed over a pile of what appears to be junk. Beneath the towel she can see a tangle of wires and various surveillance equipment. The Rat starts the Pinto. The engine rattles so hard Lara thought the car would shake apart. They exit the garage and stop at the toll booth just outside of the parking structure.

The Rat hands a ticket to the man in the toll booth. A LED screen outside of the car flashes four dollars. Desert Rat turns and stares blankly Lara once again. Lara rolls her eyes and reaches into her pocket and produces a five dollar bill and hands it to the Rat, who in turn hands it to attendant. The dollar change is returned to the Rat who begins to hand it to Lara. Lara shakes her head and says, "Keep it. It looks like you could use it." The Rat shrugs and pockets the dollar, and they head off onto the highway.

"Where are we going?" Lara asks.

"There's a canyon south of Nellis Air Force Base. I'll drop you off there," the Rat tells Lara. "There is a hydroelectric dam there that supplies part of the base's power. Nearby is an outpost. Nellis is a big base, so if you need some wheels to get around, you can probably boost something there. Just watch out, I hear that they've been doing some blasting in the canyon. Don't worry about the F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighters that you might spot doing fly-bys. They're always conducting some routine training exercises. They're used to spotting teenagers sneaking around the base anyways."

"Where am I supposed to go once I get inside?"

"Sorry babe, you're on your own there," the Rat tells her. "But let me tell you this: the guys that work on the dam and at the outpost; they're not what they seem."

"What does that mean?" Lara asks.
"Well, they're not in uniform, but they're definitely involved. I think they're 'Majestic'," the Rat says.

Lara is perplexed, "What? Sharp dressers?"

"Hardly! Sheesh!" The Rat exclaims. "Where'd Willard dig you up? You ain't got a clue, do you?" Lara glares at him. "Look, just watch yourself, okay? Those guys will beat the tar out of you first and if you're still alive, ask questions later." They continue to drive as Lara soaks it all in.

After several minutes of silence, Lara asks, "What's 'Majestic'2?"

"If you don't already know, then you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you. The truth would only leave you without answers," the Rat answers. Lara decides that this cat and mouse game isn't worth playing. The remainder of the drive is silent.

The Pinto turns off of the main highway and travels down a dirt road for several miles. Rat turns off near a canyon. Lara climbs out of the Pinto. She tears open the cardboard box and removes the top layer of packing material. Within are her weapons, carefully packed in molded blue foam. She straps on each weapon, turns and slides down into the canyon. (follow plot)

Draw weapons and keep them ready and step forward. Open fire on two vultures (1, 2) that appear above the rock arch ahead. Continue stepping forward toward the rock arch and kill a rattlesnake (3). Avoid the area to the left of the arch, which is a field quicksand. Run forward through the arch and turn right just past it. Head toward the bushes and kill another rattler (4) hiding among the bushes. Step forward and pick up the rocket (1).

Now turn around and head toward the right side of the small pond. Head into the tunnel to the right of the pool. Run down the tunnel and follow it as it turns right. Continue to the end of this tunnel and take a jump up the slope. Turn right and run forward to the end of the tunnel. Climb up to the next ledge and vault up to the higher ledge. Turn left and vault up to the next ledge. Take a running jump and grab the next rock and then pull up.
SECRET #1
Turn around and hang from the rock ledge. Shimmy to the right and then release and drop to the ground, being careful not to land on the barb wire. Turn right and step forward into SECRET #1, and kill two rattlesnakes (5, 6). After they're dead, pick up a small Medi Pack (2). Ahead, collect a crystal (3), and a box of flares (4) on the left.

Turn around and walk forward and turn right. Draw pistols, and kill another rattler (7). Head into the alcove, but not all the way to the end of the alcove, and locate a block on the left. Push it once and pick up a box of shotgun shells (5). Climb up onto the block, turn left and run forward. Vault onto the next ledge and turn left. Vault up onto the next ledge and take a running jump and grab the rock ledge.
Take a running jump to the next ledge. Turn right and jump up and pull up to the next ledge. Run forward out of the tunnel. Ahead is a strange steel structure high on this rock arch. Turn right before reaching the metal structure and run to the end of the ledge. An F-117 stealth fighter will round the the structure, fly over Lara's head, and drop down past the valley.

At the end of the ledge, turn right and take a running jump to the little ledge protruding from the rock face. Turn left, draw pistols and run toward the bush on the end of this ledge. Kill a rattler (8) that strikes as Lara gets close. Turn left and take a running jump to the next small ledge. Run forward and take a standing jump over the gap to the next small ledge. Turn left and run to the end of the ledge. Turn slightly to the right and take a jump onto the slope. Lara will hit the slope and slide backwards. Grab the bottom of the ledge and shimmy to the left. When Lara is over the lower rock ledge, let go and drop down to it.

Turn left and run to the end of this ledge and step down to a lower ledge. Turn right, run forward and pick up a large Medi Pack (6). Turn around and run forward to the end of the ledge. Turn left and vault back up to the the higher ledge. Turn right face the rock structure squarely. Take a running jump and grab to reach the rock structure. Pull up and run forward and climb up to the next ledge. Draw weapons and take a standing jump over the slope. Run forward and slightly to the right. Kill the rattler (9) and run forward along the rock arch until Lara reaches the metal structure.

Drop down the long chute and Lara will land in water. Swim forward and follow the underwater tunnel as it turns left. Surface and pull out of the water on the left side of the tunnel. Run forward until Lara reaches a canyon.

Turn right and walk to the corner of the ledge. Take a running jump to the tiny ledge. Walk forward to the corner of the ledge 3. Turn slightly to the right and take a standing jump and grab to reach the next ledge. Pull up and draw weapons. Kill a vulture (10) that is soaring around the canyon. Take a running jump to the next ledge on the canyon wall below. Run along the narrow ledge and vault up onto the next ledge. Side step to the right and pull up to the next ledge.

Turn around and take a running jump and grab to reach the high ledge. Pull up and run forward and grab a pair of Uzi clips (7). Turn around and take a running jump and grab to return to the previous ledge. Pull up and turn left. Squarely line up with the opposite ledge and take a running jump and grab to reach it.

Turn left and walk along the ledge. Take a standing jump over to the next triangular ledge. Draw pistols, step forward and Lara will take aim on a rattlesnake (11) beyond the bush ahead4. Kill it and vault up to the next ledge. Walk forward to the far left corner. Turn right and take a standing jump diagonally to the left5 to land on the sandy flat ledge. Be careful not to jump into the hole on the right, as Lara will slide down a slope, take some damage when she lands on a ledge below, and have to climb back up again. When Lara lands on the ledge two F-117 stealth fighters will fly past, crossing flight paths, overhead.

Turn right to face the hole and side step to the left until Lara reaches the slope. Take a side flip to the left to land on the slope beyond. Lara will slide backwards off the ledge, so grab the bottom of the slope and shimmy to the left6. Pull up and collect the crystal (8). Run forward and to the left and collect the small Medi Pack (9). Follow the wires that lead from the detonator down to the crate of dynamite. Run past the dynamite and forward into the eerie blue cave on the left. Pick up the box of flares (10). Turn around and take a jump out of the cave. Run past the crate of explosives back to the mouth of the cave. Turn right and run up the slope. Jump over the steep part of the slope, back to the mouth of the cave.

Stand on the right side of the cave and turn around. Hang from the edge of the mouth of the cave. Lara will find foot holds on the side of the rock face. Climb down until she reaches a ledge that leads off to the left. Shift to the left until Lara can drop to the ledge and let go. Turn left and run along the ledge until Lara steps down to the end of the ledge. Take a standing jump and grab onto the rock face. Once again Lara will find foot holds. Climb up the rock face until Lara reaches the top of the rock face, and shift to the left. Press the jump button and Lara will back flip onto a flat ledge.

Turn left and face the the rock that protrudes from the rock wall that divides the waterfalls. Take a standing jump and grab to reach the rock. Pull up and Lara will slide down the other face of the rock. Take a jump off the slope onto a small rock ledge opposite the slope before Lara slides off. Run forward and vault up to pick up small Medi Pack (11), and drop back to the small ledge. Carefully step backwards away from the wall and side step to the right. Turn Lara slightly to the right. Take a standing jump and grab to grab onto the crevice that extends right from the ledge ahead. Shimmy right until Lara is over the slanted slope. Release from the crevice and take a back flip off the sloped rock before Lara falls into the water.

Turn right and take a running jump to a small sandy ledge just past the corner where the stream turns. Walk to the right and then turn back to the left and take another running jump across the stream to the ledge on the opposite bank. Turn right and walk to the sandy beach.
SECRET #2
and Uzis
Turn left and walk over to the corner where the ceiling drops down low. Crouch and crawl under the rock and stand when Lara finds the shaft in the corner. Turn left and jump up and grab the rock wall. Lara will find foot holds, so climb up and shift to the left into SECRET #2. Turn around, draw pistols and take out a rattler (12) that is in this cave, then turn right and collect Uzis7 (12) and Uzi Clips (13) from the alcove. Drop down the hole and crawl back out from under this corner.
Run forward to the left of the rock column and draw pistols. Kill the rattler (13) hiding there. Continue forward, and note the tunnel that leads off to the left. There is an elevator shaft at the end of the tunnel, but the elevator is currently in the wrong position. Continue forward toward the large water wheel and turn right behind the large structure.

Draw pistols and walk forward. From around the corner a worker (14) will appear. Take him out and continue around to the other side of the structure. Turn right and find the ladder that leads up the side of the structure. Climb up the first ladder to a ledge and run forward and climb up the second ladder.

Run forward and drop into the trough in the middle of the structure. Run forward and climb up onto the opposite side. Turn right and run forward to the corner. Turn right when Lara reaches the corner and draw weapons. Stop when Lara gets to the mouth of the tunnel and take out a vulture (15) overhead. Turn left and kill a snake (16) hiding behind the bush. Turn around and take a jump onto the block adjacent to the lock doors. A second vulture (17) will attack from ahead.

After killing the buzzard, drop into the water and swim forward through the open lock door. Swim deep into to the water and locate a lever on the right wall. Pull the lever to open a grate behind Lara. Take a flip turn and swim into the open gate. Pick up a pair of Desert Eagle clips (14). Flip turn again and swim forward and to the right back through the open lock doors. Swim up to the surface and pull up out of the water on the right side of the aqueduct so that Lara is facing another rock arch. Run forward, around a cactus, and through the rock arch and kill a rattlesnake (18) hiding in the bush. Pick up a pair of grenades (15) from in front of the bush and turn left.

Run forward and drop into the water. Flip turn and swim down to the bottom. Locate the lever in the corner and pull it to open an underwater grate in the base of the dam. Take another flip turn and swim to the tunnel that is between the two underwater yellow structures at the base of the dam. There are a series of levers in the tunnel, so return to the surface for air as necessary.

Just inside the tunnel, turn Lara upward and she will find a lever. Pull it to open the grate that blocks the other end of this tunnel. Swim down and forward. When the tunnel takes a turn to the right. Have Lara take a hairpin turn and locate the lever just around the corner. Pull it to open a steel door in a tunnel above and also move the two locks which will start the water wheel. Continue forward through the tunnel and it will turn upward. Swim up the underwater shaft and surface. Pull up out of the water and and run down the tunnel at the top of the dam.

Pull the switch to raise the elevator and turn around. Turn right when Lara gets to the open aqueduct. Slide down the aqueduct and drop into the water. Swim across the reservoir, surface on the banks opposite the dam, and pull out of the water. Run forward along the side of the aqueduct. Take a jump to the shallow sandy river bed.

Run forward toward to where the dry river bed drops off. Turn to the left, just past where the river narrows, Lara will find a large Medi Pack (16). Turn right and walk to the edge of the drop off and look across the drop to find a sandy ledge slightly above. Side step to the right until Lara is lined up with the flate middle part of the ledge. Take a running jump and grab to reach the ledge. Pull up and walk forward to collect a small Medi Pack (17). Reverse roll and take a running jump back to the sandy river bed.

Turn around and head toward to the far right edge of the river bed. There is a rock ledge below that Lara can drop to, so when Lara gets to the corner, turn around and face away from the drop off and safety drop down onto the rock ledge. Turn around and walk forward and to the far left corner. Turn slightly to the right and take a standing jump into the alcove behind the waterfall. Pick up a rocket (18), reverse roll, and walk back to the opening of this alcove.

Carefully angle Lara to the left and take a standing jump back to the rock ledge. Turn around and walk to the edge of the ledge. Face squarely forward and take a standing jump down to the sandy ledge below. Angle Lara to the left and take a running jump to the next small ledge. Turn right and take one more running jump to a rock ledge just before a small waterfall. Run forward to the flat rock and turn left. Run forward, and Lara will drop off the rock, land on a slope and slide to a sandy beach.

If Lara slid down the last slope backwards, then she needs to turn around. Run forward and turn right. Take a running jump over the stream and run forward toward the water wheel. Run around behind the structure, turning left. On the other side of the water wheel, draw weapons and turn left again, and then run forward and to the right and enter the tunnel that leads to the elevator.
Detonator Switch
The tunnel will bend to the right and back to the left. When Lara steps down out of the other side of the tunnel, another dam worker (19) will attack. Take a back flip while firing on him. When he charges, jump over his head, reverse roll and continue to fire. He should go down quickly. When he's down, run around to the open side of the elevator, and collect a crystal (19). Enter the elevator and collect the Detonator switch (20) in the far left corner.

Exit the elevator and run around to exit through the tunnel. When Lara returns to the sandy beach, go ahead and dive into the water and let the current sweep Lara over the waterfalls into the canyon below. If Lara is swept out on the right side, she may land on a rock ledge. If she does, go ahead and take a cliff dive into the water below.

When Lara lands in the water turn around and collect the box of flares (21) that is in an underwater alcove underneath the left waterfall. Take a flip turn and swim around to the left and into an alcove under the right waterfalls to collect a box of shotgun shells (22). Flip turn again and pick up the Uzi clips (23) which are on the river bed right in between the two waterfalls. Swim forward and pick up a box of shotgun shells (24) on the right. Continue swimming forward and follow the river as it bends to the left and collect a pair of Uzi clips (25) in the middle of the canyon.

Turn around and swim toward the waterfalls. Surface on the left and pull up out of the water at a small rock ledge on the left. Climb up to the higher rock ledge and turn right and walk forward to the edge. Carefully line Lara up with the sloping rock ledge on the opposite side of the canyon. Take a running jump and do not make any attempts to grab the rock8. When Lara lands on the sloping rock, turn right and take a running jump to the flat rocky ledge.

Turn left and run off the ledge. Lara will slide down a short slope to a flat ledge below. Pick up the box of shotgun shells (26) and turn around. Back away from the upper ledge and take a standing jump back up to it. Turn and walk to the far left corner. Aim Lara at the flat reddish rock ledge which slopes away on both sides. Take a running jump and grab to reach the rock. Climb up the face of the canyon wall. When Lara reaches the higher ledge, shift to the left. Have Lara release when she is over the ledge, and turn around.
SECRET #3
Turn right and walk to the corner of the ledge. Take a running jump to the tiny ledge. Walk forward to the corner of the ledge. Turn slightly to the right and take a standing jump and grab to reach the next ledge. Pull up and take a running jump to the next ledge on the canyon wall below. Run along the narrow ledge and vault up onto the next ledge. Side step to the right and pull up to the next ledge.

Turn left and squarely line up with the opposite ledge. Take a running jump and grab to reach it. Wait until Lara finds foot holds, and start climbing down the rock face. When Lara reaches the crevice, allow Lara to climb down with just her hands. When Lara will climb no lower, release and immediately grab the ledge below. When Lara finds footholds below, climb down until she reaches the next crevice. Let go and grab once again. Shimmy right until Lara can pull up into SECRET #3. Run forward and drop into the pit. Collect Desert Eagle clips (27) and MP5 clips (28). Climb out of this secret cave and drop back into the water. Lara will need to make her way back around the canyon walls again.

Swim to the right, back toward the waterfalls. Surface on the left and pull up out of the water at a small rock ledge on the left. Climb up to the higher rock ledge and turn right and walk forward to the edge. Carefully line Lara up with the sloping rock ledge on the opposite side of the canyon. Take a running jump, and again remember not to make any attempts to grab the rock 8. When Lara lands on the sloping rock, turn right and take a running jump to the flat rocky ledge.

Turn right and aim Lara at the flat reddish rock ledge which slopes away on both sides. Take a running jump and grab to reach the rock. Climb up the face of the canyon wall. When Lara reaches the higher ledge, shift to the left. Have Lara release when she is over the ledge, and turn around.

Pull up and turn left. Squarely line up with the opposite ledge and take a running jump and grab to reach it. Turn left and walk along the ledge. Take a standing jump over to the next triangular ledge. Vault up to the next ledge. Walk forward and to the far right corner. Turn right and take a standing jump diagonally to the right to land on the sandy flat ledge. Turn and face right and side step to the left until Lara reaches the slope. Take a side flip to the left to land on the slope beyond. Lara will slide backwards off the ledge, so grab the bottom of the slope and shimmy to the left6. Pull up and run forward to the detonator.

Use the detonator switch to unlock the detonator. Lara will push down the plunger and set off the dynamite. The explosion will release a boulder from the dark alcove ahead. Take a side flip to the left to avoid it. Turn right and run down the slope. Turn left and head into the cave.

Inside the cave, head toward the rocks on the left. Step up to the lower of the two ledges and turn right. Jump straight up and grab the ledge above. Pull up and reverse roll. Take a running jump over to the small triangular ledge on the adjacent corner. Turn left and take a standing jump to another triangular ledge. Run forward and climb up onto the ridge ahead and to the left.

Crawl forward and run forward. Run down the slope. Avoid the electrified fences on the left and head toward the bushes on the right corner. Grab the grenades (29) in between the three bushes, and turn left. Head toward the area to the right of the fenced area. Climb into the hole and crawl to the right and back to the left. Follow the tunnel by running forward and turning left.

Take a standing jump and grab to reach the ledge above. Turn right and climb up to the next ledge. Run forward and drop into the water. Swim around the steel column in the middle of the reservoir to find an underwater lever on the back side. Pull it to open a yellow door elsewhere. Swim around the column into the corrugated aluminum pipe and pull the lever on the left wall. Pull the lever to open a side door to the water tower Turn left and swim back through the pipe and surface back in the opening.

Run forward and drop down to the lower ledge. Turn left and run forward and drop down to the ledge ahead. If Lara falls down to the bottom, climb back up to the middle ledge. Turn right and run back to the hole. Crouch down and crawl to the right and back to the left to return to the outside.

Run forward to the cave entrance and turn left. Slide down into the cave and draw pistols. Turn left and run forward. Kill two rattlers (20, 21) ahead and enter the open door on the right. Once inside, turn left and pull the lever on the left wall to open the door between the corrugated aluminum pipe and the water tower to flood the inside of the water tower.

Exit the room and turn left. Head back to the slope where Lara slid down. Climb to the small ledge to the right of the slope. Side step to the right and turn left. Take a standing jump up to the slightly slanted ledge above. Turn right and run out of the tunnel. Turn right again and run along the sandy path beside the electrified fence.

Vault back into the hole and crawl to the right and back to the left. Run forward and turn left. This time drop into the hole and turn right. Run forward, and turn left. Crawl into the hole and quickly draw weapons. Run forward and kill two dam workers (22, 23) by charging them and jumping over them while firing.

Locate the ladder on one of the supports for the water tower. Climb up to the top and enter the water tower. Turn left and drop into the water. Swim to the right and surface. Pull up out of the water onto the ledge with the open door. Take a running jump over the electrified fence to land on a generator. Lara will take a little damage when she lands on the yellow generator. Drop off the right side of the generator, draw weapons, and immediately run forward and around the corner of the building.

Kill another worker (24) ahead and run past the garage. Kill a second worker (25) that's outside the garage. Another F-117 stealth fighter will fly overhead. Enter the garage, and draw weapons. Kill the first worker (26) that will attack from the left. Hang around and a second worker (27) will climb over the crates in the back of the room and attack. After killing the second worker, collect a small Medi Pack (30) from him. Head around the crates on the right side of the room to collect some Uzi clips (31).

Climb onto the quad bike and drive it out of the garage. Turn the bike left and then line the bike up with the ramp on the side of the building. Accelerate the bike up the ramp and onto the top of the building. When Lara reaches the flat part of the roof, the bike will lurch forward. Reverse the bike or try taking a hard turn to the right to stop the bike on the roof.
Generator Access Card
If Lara manages to stop the bike on the roof, then dismount the bike, but if the bike was traveling too fast, and Lara was unable to brake in time to stop the bike before sliding down the opposite side of the roof, a metal grate on the side of the building will have raised when the quad bike reached the flat part of the roof. Lara can use the wooden crate on the side of the garage and the and the metal grate to climb back onto the roof9. Run to the far right corner of the building and collect the Generator Access (32) card.

Turn around, mount the quad bike and drive it back down the slope to the ground, or slide down the ground if Lara climbed up without it. Run around to the right, to the front of the building and draw weapons. Run inside the building, and a worker (28) will attack from the right when Lara steps down off the threshold. After killing the worker, run past the billiard table to the computer room. Turn right and use the access card in the lock to open the grate on the right. Immediately draw weapons and kill the worker (29) that will emerge from inside. Enter the generator room and flip the switch to turn off the generators.

Turn around and return to the computer room. Turn left and return to the recreation room, and then exit the building. Turn left and run forward, past the garage entrance. Run to the gates ahead. Locate the switch to the left of the gate. Throw the switch to open the gates. Return to the quad bike and climb onto it. Drive the bike out of the front gates.

Turn left and drive the bike to the wide cave opening and drive the bike down the steep slope. Turn left and line the bike up with the ramp. Accelerate the bike up over the ramp to enter the high security compound.

Lara reaches the perimeter of the high security compound of the Nellis Air Force Base. The gates are locked tight and the high electrified fence is topped with razor-wire. Signs in front of the gates prohibit photography and trespassing.

Lara's come all this way and isn't about to be stopped by some high fences. She begins to scans her surroundings. A rock formation just outside of the fence looks like it can be used as a ramp to jump over the fence. One never knows if something's possible unless one tries, and Lara's always one to try. Lara revs up the quad bike and accelerates it toward the slope and the bike is launched into the air.

Lara experiences a moment of exhilaration as she clears the razorwire, but the feeling is short-lived as a deep sinking feeling immediately sets in. The bike doesn't have enough forward momentum to clear the bent upper fence. Before Lara can jump off the bike, the back tires hit the upper part of the fence. The fence is amazingly rigid and the quad bike bounces off of it like a toy, throwing Lara forward. Lara and the bike take a few tumbles down a rocky ledge and then she and the bike careen over the ledge. Lara screams as she falls down to the stream below.

Lara lands hard on the far bank of the stream, knocking the wind out of her, and the quad bike crashes down beside her. Fighting to stay conscious, Lara's world begins to fill with bright white spots, and then everything fades out.

Two military police walk over to investigate the perimeter breach. One walks over and stabs at the ground next to Lara with his baton to see if the intruder is conscious. "You crazy geek freak," the first MP addresses the unconscious Lara. "What kind of stunt was that to pull?" He turns to the other MP, and tells him, "Let's take her in."

The other guard looks her over and says, "She don't look much like one of them. Maybe she's a eco-terrorist or somethin'." They lift Lara up onto their shoulders.

Stunned by the other guard's inane comment, the first guard points his nose down at Lara and says, "And they wear hot pants, huh?" The two guards walk along the shallow stream and carry Lara between the two of them into a tunnel leading down to a secret underground compound. (follow plot)

Footnotes:
  1. Please note that this segment of plot does not appear in any cut scene or full motion video sequence. The following paragraphs of plot were wholly fabricated by the staff of the Traveler's Guide. Any resemblance of characters portrayed in this story to any persons real or fictional is purely coincidental.

  2. For your information, depending on which conspiracy theory you subscribe to or TV show you watch, "Project Majestic", "Operation Majestic", or "Majestic 12" refers to an American and/or multinational top secret organization/operation/consortium that involves the concealment and/or defense against possible and/or present extra-terrestrial threat to earth. Project Majestic is a Congressional "black budget" operation that was supposedly formed by American Presidential order in the 1950's after a reported incident of an unidentified flying object crashing in the desert of Roswell New Mexico. Theoretically, that means that Majestic answers only to the President, however recent conspiracy theorists believe that Majestic's authority well exceeds that of any elected or appointed government official. The crates that Lara will encounter in the next couple of levels marked with MJ-12 clearly implies this association.

  3. Get familiar with this path. Lara will need to make use of it at least once more. If you fall into the water in the bottom of the canyon, you will need to locate a ledge, with which Lara can pull out of the water. From there, Lara will need to climb to a higher ledge, turn right and take a running jump to reach a sloped ledge on the opposite wall of the canyon. From there, turn right and take another running jump, and from there turn right again and take a running jump and grab to reach a reddish rock ledge. Climb up the rock face, and shift to the left when Lara reaches the higher ledge. From here, Lara will need to start making her way around the side of the canyon again. We mention the underwater pickups at the bottom of the canyon later. Please also read footnote #3 for more about one of the jumps Lara needs to make when climbing out of the canyon.

  4. Don MacDonald reports that he is unable to target this rattler from the ledge below using pistols. I've tried it repeatedly and I'm able to kill it every time from the triangular ledge below. Depending on whether or not you can shoot it from the ledge below, you may have to vault up before shooting.

  5. Thanks to Igor Kudrnovsky for catching a dyslexic right that should have been a left.

  6. The method that is probably intended to get around this slope is to hang off of the edge of the ledge. Release and grab the lower crevice, shimmy to the left until Lara can pull up. Walk forward and take a standing jump and grab to reach the sloped ledge ahead. Pull up and immediately back flip off of the steep slope to land on the ledge above. You can do it that way, but I think our way is faster.

  7. Feel free to use the Uzis or shotgun on all the human enemies for the remainder of this level. Waste as much ammunition as possible before completing the level. You'll understand soon enough.

  8. Although the distance from the first rock ledge to the sloping yellow rock ledge is three blocks, and normally a grab is called for, in this case you must not attempt to grab the ledge. If you attempt to grab the edge, Lara will stop her forward momentum just before the third block and attempt to grab the lower edge of the rock ledge. That ledge is too low for Lara to grab and Lara will fall past the edge and into the water. If Lara just performs a plain running jump her feet will land on the bottom edge of the slope and she will be able to clear the gap with ease.

  9. An attempt to drive the quad bike onto the roof of the building must be made before the metal grate will raise. To reach the grate, climb onto the wooden crate outside of the garage, and turn around. Take a standing jump and grab to reach the metal grate. Pull up and climb onto the roof of the building. Take a standing jump over the slope to the uppper flat part of the roof. This is useful if Lara somehow fell off the roof, leaving the quad bike on the roof.
