| The Golden Mask of Tornarsuk -- General Hints | ||
1. KNOW
THE
TRICKS
We want to give you a few specific hints and tricks that might help keep you alive. You sould also consult General Hints for Tomb Raider II for more hints and tips
Shoot Outs
Fairly quickly, you will find yourself pitted against armed mercenaries. The levels don't provide you with much room to maneuver when battling human opponents. Where possible, look for a safer location to shoot enemies from. Without a safe hiding place, draw single handed weapons (like the Uzis or the pistols) and circle enemies to defeat them. This can be done by running circles around them or jumping over them, reverse rolling, and repeating.
Who Loves You?
Not every enemy in these levels are out to kill you. Some can be quite helpful, though hard to see.
No Stone Unturned
Although The Golden Mask returns to the "three per level" form of secrets like in Tomb Raider 2. You will, however, not be awarded with additional ammunition or items when you pick up the third secret item. Instead, the secrets will provide a benefit that players of Tomb Raider 3 may be familiar with. Although
2. KNOW
THE
WEAPONS
We would direct your attention to the Tomb Raider 2 Weapons Guide for the Tomb Raider 2. The weapons are the same.
3. KNOW
THY
ENEMIES
In the Golden Mask levels, you will encounter some familiar enemies, and some familar enemies with a fresh look. If you don't want to spoil the surprise, you should stop reading now, otherwise read on for some general information on the enemies you will encounter in these levels.
Great Whilte Shark
When Lara plops into the glacial sea of in The Cold War level, she will encounter a great white shark. The shark can swim quite fast and Lara isn't properly equipt to fight it. The best idea is to get out of the water as quickly as possible and deal with the monster from dry land.
Snow Leopards
Also in The Cold War, Lara will encounter snow leopards. These big cats are fierce but not tough. They fall quite readily under pistol fire. If Lara keeps her distance, she can down these big cats with ease.
Mercenaries
Lara will also encounter mercenaries from the organization, A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E. in The Cold War level. These brutes are armed with hand guns and are dressed either in orange ski jackets or in all-white snow camouflage. When dealing with these trigger-happy goons, attempt to find a safe place to hide and sniper them from a distance. If a frontal confrontaiton in close quarters is necessary, the best thing to do is to keep moving and either run circles around them or run back and forth past them, reversing to change directions while firing continously.
Eagles
The Cold War, Lara will also encounter eagles. These slow flyers are fairly easy to deal with, because it is fairly easy to stay away from them. Just keep moving past them when they get directly overhead. From the moment you hear their screeching cry, take aim and keep moving.
Warrior Spirits
Deeper in The Cold War, Lara will encounter Inuit warrior spirits. These ghosts are mostly invisible and they can pass through sheets of ice. With careful examination, their shadowy figures can just be made out. These spirits will not attack Lara if she doesn't initiate aggression first. Choose quickly whether you want them as friends or enemies. Although these are "spirits", apparently they are still susceptible to gun fire.
Dobermans
These familar pooches can be found in Fool's Gold. They're both aggressive as well as fast. Their bite does significant damage. Much more than you would expect. Kill them quickly, using the shotgun if necessary, or get to higher ground if you can find it.
Guards
Mercenary guards will appear in Fool's Gold. Also belonging to the organization known as A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E., these mercenaries are armed with shotguns. They fire incessantly, so just jumping around will not allow you to dodge their fire. If possible shoot at them from cover, otherwise use powerful weapons to take them down quickly. You will be revisited by some thugs in Nightmare in Vegas.
Thugs
Not all A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E. mercenaries are armed with guns. You will encounter some thugs in Fool's Gold that are armed with pipes. There is no safe place to hide from these guys, because the places you can climb to, they can also climb up after you. In fact, their spiked snow boots allow them to climb slopes that are too steep for you to climb. They can be taken down quickly from a distance, but when two of them are attacking at the same time, we recommend more fire-power.
Flamethrowers
As if shotguns aren't enough, A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E. has also armed some of their men with flamethrowers in Fool's Gold. These guys aren't worried about world petroleum conservation. They fire quite liberally. Your only consolation is that the range of their flame throwers is shorter than your pistols. Keep your distance, and you'll do fine.
Crows
It seems crows are able to make their living in just about any climate. Where ever there is garbage to be picked through, you'll find these winged scavengers. In Fool's Gold and Furnace of the Gods, food is scarce, so these crows seem to have adopted attacking people. Don't let them get directly overhead. Keep moving and shooting to take them out.
Rats
No surprise that this old facility has rats. In Fool's Gold and Furnace of the Gods you will encounter a few of these vermin in various buildings and caves. They're small but annoying and can often be found in groups. Pistols are more than enough to exterminate these pests.
Wolves
Within the Furnace of the Gods you will encounter a small pack of wolves. Because of the location these wolves have chosen to make their home, eliminating their threat is trivial.
Reanimated Warriors
Unlike the restless warrior spirits you encountered before, by using the power of the Golden Mask, these previously dead warriors, found in Furnace of the Gods have been given a second chance at life. These tough warriors are armed with spears are quite spry. Don't shoot at them and they won't attack you.
Carp
In various pools in Furnace of the Gods you will encounter some of these golden carp. They're very slow swimmers, so you can avoid them quite easily. You can try to harpoon them, but it's much easier to just climb out and shoot at them with pistols. It's just like, well... shooting fish in a barrel.
Polar Bears
Deep within the Furnace of the Gods you will find a couple of polar bears. They're big, fast, and mean. If you can shoot at them from somewhere safe, you're better off doing so. Otherwise, it's a lot of frantic jumping around and shooting before you down one of these guys. We can almost guarantee you'll get mauled your first couple of times.
Sasquatch
In the Kingdom you will encounter sasquatch, otherwise known as the big foot. These big creatures are quite reminiscent of the yeti of Tibet. Everything you remember about yeti is true about these sasquatch, which is the North American variety. They take lots of firepower to bring down and they can climb up after you regardless of where you try to go to hide. Don't hesitate to use powerful weapons, such as Uzis, on these beasts.
Golden Guardian
The final enemy you will have to deal with in the Kingdom as well as Nightmare in Vegas is the Golden Guardian. You may recall that a creature similar to this one guarded the Talion in Tibet. You can out run the Guardian if you make use of running jumps. The Guardian's single minded purpose is to corner you and pound you into the ground. Keep ahead of it and slip past it when it gets close. The best strategy is find some place safe and take pot shots at it.
Gunmen
The first sign of trouble Nightmare in Vegas will be armed men in an adjacent hotel room. Soon you find that they're holding Winston hostage. That won't do, but they are armed with semi-automatic weapons, whereas you've just got pistols and the shotgun. Jumping around won't protect you from their blasts. Find places to hide, or otherwise, charge them and take them down with two shotgun blasts. Run past them, firing once as you make your first pass, then reverse roll and empty a second blast into them as they turn around.
Tyrannosaurus Rex
There are a couple of T-Rexes that get loose in Nightmare in Vegas. If you've learned anything from your previous encounters with these dinosaurs, then you will do well to put that wisdom to use now. It's fully possible to down these beasts with only your pistols, but even easier if you're not in a position to get your head bit off.
